The Journal
A magazine on current events and culture from a Christian perspective.
The Journal is one essay or work on culture, drawing from disparate areas and unified by a single theme, and that theme is always broadly the goodness of God.
our posture:
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Psalm 46

A note from the editor:
I was less afraid once, a long time ago. And I was also more afraid, before that, a long time ago. And what this taught me is that mind states are fluid, transitory, emotional, circumstantial, imagined, real, seasonal, etc. Try to establish then, a state of peace regardless of the situation. And how do we know this, and moreover— how can we do this? Easy. God says:
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
It’s your ego trying to make it all make sense, to try to fix it. But some things are God’s not yours.

Think of all the things that are peaceful
Falling asleep after a long day
The sound of a city waking up
The laughter of friends at dinner
The sound of waves quietly lapping on a lake
The percolating of coffee on a stove
Soup in winter
A tea kettle
Snow falling
Hugs
Running quietly on a path you know well
Feeling lighter
A weight lifted
The sun on your face
A deep breath
An exhale
Someone saying: I hear you
A smile
God bless you
The way you feel when someone forgives you
A feeling of being okay
Hope
Fearlessness without danger
Accepted
Approved
Light shining in through the shades
Morning
Jumping over a stream
Rocks slippery with green algae
Spring around the corner
The finer things
Lace for no reason
Making cookies
Pasta
Dipping buttered bread into sauce
Steak with good red wine
Apples
Crispy pie
Kisses
Forgetting and then remembering and smiling
Seeing
Like God sees
The dance of life
Someone running beautifully
Fish with shiny colors
And the way horses are
Birds the way they move
Ice skates!
A hockey puck hitting the net
outside
On a frozen lake
Just you making the score
The sound of the lake percolating saying:
I saw it, you heard it together
Seals, how they play and evade
Even though sometimes polar bears
The way whales don’t hurt us
The fact that sharks are dumb
And monkeys are funny
People who paint
But good art
Thanksgiving and everyone grateful
Walking into a full warm home
People you love
Waking up late, nowhere to be Saturdays
Playing lightly a funny yet poignant tune on a piano
Homeless people who dance and say
The truth
Life unfolding
The messiness and order beneath it
Communion
Prayers of peace
Truth-telling
Reconciliation
Releasing pain
Letting it go
A back rub
A foot rub
A wound that has healed
Hugs again!
Chocolate
Accountability
Humility
Kindness
Thoughtfulness
Candor
Vulnerability
Giving
Without needing
Not having to be fake
When a storm has passed
Getting somewhere on time
Saying the right thing even when it’s hard
Receiving help and not rejecting it
Not having to figure it all out
Being present
Not feeling responsible for problems you didn’t create
Or burdens that are not yours to carry
Seeing through it all
And choosing peace
God
Knowing life is a process instead of just trying to get through it
Knitting
Daily bread
Fixing a button
Linen fresh
Candles
Giving away things you love to people who need it
And seeing that this is the point
A tidy home
Prayers of the people
On bended knee
Being royal and
Writing a thank you note
To God
Saying hello to someone who feels invisible
Patience
Unnecessary generosity
Flowers peeking through brambles
Realizing you might be a jerk
Olive trees
Trees that have bent over in the snow
But bounced back
People who still have their Christmas lights up
Real honey
Soda and chips on the seashore
A cold bath
A hot shower
Dancing like you did in high school
Short skirts and high boots don’t care
Big warm winter coats
Waiting to see what Jesus says about it
Baggy jeans
Men in lovely tweed jackets
Women in silk scarves
Yellow gold
A man smoking a lovely smelling pipe
Dusty brown feet in sandals
Strings trumpets
Golden light on sea boats
Green hills filled with flowers
Blue deep seas
High mountains with snow
The rain in summer
The snow in winter
Children playing and laughing
And good parents not far away
Snack trays
Those wrinkles around the eyes when people smile
My dad’s silly jokes
Churches
Cookouts
Champagne
Prince guitar solos
Soccer and touchdowns
Professional service
Leaving a good tip
A long afternoon lunch
Open hands
Grace
Respect
Restraint
Rolling your shoulders
Being silly for yourself
Laughing at the way you were once
The ‘90s, the 80’s, the 70’s
Being young
Being old
Being in the middle of
True love
Accepting yourself
Not blaming anyone anymore
Asking God for help with something hard
Getting an A+
Trying a new habit that’s good for you
Winning when you thought you’d lost
Being excited about a new day
How weird cats are
Dogs lying in the sun
People who talk to animals
And know they understand
A beautiful tan at the end of summer
People who see how everything is
Threaded of divine love
Those who love Jesus and see Him in everyone
People who admit they aren’t perfect
People who try
And those who wait for God
Those who love
Those who see the best in people
Even when they have evidence of the worst
Those who lock their doors but not their hearts
Those who walk slowly
Breathe deeply
Those who sing badly
And loudly
And joyfully
Those who work hard
Those who care
Those who say yes— I can help, but not hurt
Those who witness
To all these:
Do not despair
God is there
And He is love
And love is everlasting
And brilliant
And forever
And ever, which is why this list is unending . . .

bread
why we like this work: Limebear’s songs are so eloquent and beautiful, they speak for themselves, and are straight from Heaven, I am sure. If you have a heart, you will not have words to explain why they are moving, and if you don’t have a heart, she’ll help you find it again. enjoy.
